Islamic Education is a rapidly growing field of research and professional practice. This flexible MA programme facilitates critical dialogue between Islamic and Western approaches to education, enabling you to develop as a reflective, research-informed practitioner. Designed for educators, faith leaders, and professionals working within Muslim communities and mainstream educational settings, the programme equips you to respond effectively to the educational needs and aspirations of Muslim children and young people. It enables you to design culturally responsive pedagogies that contribute to public understanding of Islam, peace-building, and wider educational research, policy, and practice in diverse local and global contexts.

Modules
Understand foundations of Islamic Education, build your knowledge of current theories, literature, research, advanced scholarship and methodologies.
Theoretical perspectives: Developing methodological skills for critically examining educational and pedagogical cultures; exploring (Post)Coloniality and Educational Theory; and assessing historical, textual, theological, and empirical literature on faith leadership education, educational reform, well-being, and peace education.
Contemporary challenges: Exploring the educational and pedagogical challenges facing Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts in the Global South, with particular reference to European and British Muslim diasporas.
Research skills: Developing the academic and practical skills required for scholarly and interdisciplinary empirical research, including Action Research.
Curriculum and pedagogy: Critically evaluating Islamic education resources, curricula, and teaching approaches.
Professional development: Growing your skills as an educator, faith leader, RE teacher, researcher, and community leader

This programme has a number of optional modules to choose from. Our optional module lists are subject to change each year to keep the student learning experience current and up-to-date.

Flexible learning: combine online study with workshops, seminars and lectures

Interdisciplinary study: connect perspectives from education studies, pedagogy, theology and social sciences
Within the centre we use a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops. For
large modules (100+), in addition to your lecture you will be assigned to
seminar groups (between 15 and 30 students) for in-depth discussion and
activities.
For each module you will typically attend 3 hours of lectures and/or seminars
each week during the Autumn and Spring Terms of modules, with additional
research methods training and dissertation preparation in the Spring Term. In
the Summer Term, and over the summer period you will attend large group,
small group and individual tutorials relating to your dissertation work.
Assessment types vary depending on modules selected but may be a mixture of assignments and oral presentations. You will also complete a dissertation based on an individual research project, with support from a research supervisor.
Entry requirements
2:2 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a related subject or successful completion of the Islamic Education PGA.
Minimum 3 years of teaching experience within formal and informal Muslim education settings. These institutions include Islamic faith-based schools, supplementary Mosque schools (Madrassahs), Islamic higher education institutions/Islamic study circles, chaplaincy and couching related youth work and community development centres. The candidates need obtain references from these institutions substantiating their formal and informal teaching and work experience relevant to the MA Islamic Education programme.
IELTS overall score of 7.0, minimum component scores of two at 6.0/6.5 and the rest at 7.0 or above.

Fees and scholarships
Tuition fees are payable for each year of your course at the start of the academic year, or at the start of your course, if later. Academic fees cover the cost of tuition, examinations and assessment and some student amenities.
We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Students will be classified as Home or Overseas fee status. Your fee status determines tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available. If you receive an offer, your fee status will be clearly stated alongside the tuition fee information.

If you believe that your fee status has been classified incorrectly, you can complete a fee status assessment questionnaire. Please follow the instructions in your offer information and provide the documents needed to reassess your status.
As well as tuition fees and living expenses, some courses may require you to cover the cost of field trips or costs associated with travel abroad.

Dissertations and Assignments are only submitted digitally. However, students may wish to print and bind their dissertation for their own purposes. Students on some courses will have a final poster presentation as part of their project and the printing of posters may be at the students’ expense.

While this course does not offer a formal work placement, postgraduate taught students at Warwick can self-source internships and work experience to complete alongside their studies, subject to visa conditions and the 20‑hour weekly limit for full‑time students.
Opportunities can vary in length and location, including in the UK, online and internationally. Postgraduate students find that shorter, remote and/or flexible opportunities work best around their studies, often seeking opportunities over the summer when teaching decreases and the focus moves to final dissertations and projects - although this can vary depending on the nature of the course and personal preference.

Whilst there is lots of support available at the University to help, students themselves are responsible for finding and securing a suitable internship or work experience. You will also be responsible for ensuring opportunities meet visa requirements, do not exceed the universities advised 20 hours per week for full-time students and for balancing extra-curricular activity with your studies.

The on-time deadline for taught postgraduate courses starting in September/October 2027 is 2 August 2027.
We will still accept late applications, however cannot guarantee that the application will be processed in time to complete the admissions process if received in September or there are a number of conditions to meet.
If applying late please include your degree certificates and transcripts, English proficiency evidence (if needed) and ensure referees can submit references promptly to allow time for CAS and visa processing (if applicable).
