Available as MSc degree courses, Warwick’s Statistics courses with possible specialisations in Data Science, Finance or Probability aim to cover topics most relevant to a career as a professional statistician or data scientist. Your training will open the way to employment in many sectors, including marketing, insurance, banking and pharmaceutical industry. It may also provide the pathway to a research degree (PhD).
Course overview
From 2025/26, Warwick’s MSc in Statistics introduces an innovative structure, offering a choice between a broad Statistics MSc or specialised degree pathways in Data Science, Finance, and Probability. This modernised programme provides unparalleled flexibility, allowing students to tailor their learning to their ambitions through four distinctive options:
- MSc in Statistics
- MSc in Statistics with Data Science
- MSc in Statistics with Finance
- MSc in Statistics with Probability
The general MSc in Statistics offers a comprehensive foundation in statistical theory and applications, while the specialised degree variants allow you to focus on areas that align with your career or research aspirations:
- MSc in Statistics with Data Science: Integrates statistical theory with cutting-edge applications in AI, machine learning, and health analytics.
- MSc in Statistics with Finance: Combines rigorous statistical training with insights into modern financial systems and practical applications.
- MSc in Statistics with Probability: Ideal for those with a passion for theoretical frameworks and their real-world applications.
General entry requirements
Minimum requirements
2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Statistics, Mathematics or a science with sufficiently high mathematical content.

- No score lower than 6.0 in all IELTS fields with a total score of 6.5 minimum.

Core modules
The total load is exactly 180 credits (called cats at Warwick). All students take 8 modules (each worth 15 credits) in the taught component and a dissertation worth 60 credits. All MSc students are required to take the following core modules:

For the MSc in Statistics with Data Science your optional modules are geared towards covering themes in Bayesian statistics, Machine learning, Statistical learning, Topics in Data Science, Monte Carlo methods. Availability may change from year to year (subject to availability, you will also have access to a varying selection of modules from the Computer Science Department). In addition you may choose up to 3 modules from a broad range of further modules from the other lists. The following modules are planned to be available as specialised optional modules, that you will at least choose 2 modules from:

For the MSc in Statistics with Finance optional modules cover themes in Mathematical finance. Availability may change from year to year. In addition you may choose up to 3 modules from a broad range of further modules from the other lists. The following modules are currently planned to be available as specialised optional modules that you will at least choose 2 modules from:

MSc in Statistics with Probability
For the MSc in Statistics with Probability optional modules cover probability and applied probability from the Statistics Department. Availability may change from year to year (subject to availability, you will have access to a varying selection of modules from the Mathematics Department). In addition you may choose up to 3 modules from a broad range of further modules from the other lists. The following modules are currently planned to be available as specialised optional modules that you will at least choose 2 modules from:

Students on the MSc in Statistics choose 6 optional modules. The choice includes the extra core and all optional modules listed above for the three specialised degrees. In addition, a range of further modules is offered. Availability may change from year to year. The following modules are examples:

Teaching
For the nine-month period from end of September to June, you will be engaged in the taught component of the programme by attending a set of eight modules covering the core and optional modules as appropriate for each pathway.
After successfully completing the taught component worth 120 credits you will undertake a dissertation project, worth 60 credits, over summer under supervision of a member of staff. This final project offers the chance to apply knowledge to real-world challenges or delve into advanced research topics.
Assessment
Assessment is initially made for each module separately: some modules have an element of continuous assessment through coursework, but the majority of modules are assessed through written examinations in January, May and June.
Your performance in the core and optional modules combined is then examined by an examinations board consisting of academic staff plus an External Examiner appointed from another university. Dissertations are examined in the Department and then by the External Examiner.
The MSc degree is awarded subject to satisfactory standard in the dissertation and taught modules. Students who do outstandingly well in both taught modules and the dissertation may be awarded the MSc with Distinction or Merit.
Reading lists
Pre-reading: Students are expected to have pre-existing standard undergraduate knowledge in statistics and probability covering Probability, Random Variables, Expectations and important inequalities (see, for example, Part 1 in “All of Statistics: A Concise Course in Statistical Inference” by Larry Wasserman (Springer Texts in Statistics).
