Course overview

Our professionally orientated Accountancy and Finance degree is consistently ranked highly in major UK league tables. You will gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to operate effectively in the fast-paced world of multinational companies and global financial markets. You will be encouraged from the outset to think critically, enabling you to analyse and interpret real-life business issues in order to devise solutions, helping to prepare you for your career in accountancy, financial services, or management.

You will also have the opportunity to develop your interpersonal skills including communication, leadership and teamworking, to become more adaptable and resilient to change. You will be taught by leading academics who are well connected with industry and able to combine cutting-edge theory with real-world practice. We have well-established links with accountancy firms, investment banks and renowned national and international employers such as JP Morgan and EY. In your final year, the module Critical Issues in Management will enable you to integrate what you have learned throughout your studies, enhance your knowledge through the introduction of new concepts, and apply your skills to a range of real-life case studies.

You will also have the opportunity to extend your degree to four years with a placement year studying abroad or working in the UK or overseas.

Course structure

The structure for this course depends on which modules you take throughout the three years, giving you the option to focus your studies around accounting, finance or a mixture of both.

Year One

Terms one and two: Study seven core modules introducing you to the fundamentals of accounting, finance and business management with the option to choose between ‘Business Analytics’ and ‘Management Organisations and Society’ for your eighth module. Term three: Revision and exams.

Year Two

Terms one and two: You will study five core modules with the option to further focus your studies in either Accounting, Finance or a combination of the two. Term three: Revision and exams.

Year Three

Terms one and two: You will study a year-long core module and choose six electives, of which four must be from an accounting or finance discipline. With the remaining two, you can either choose from a list of Business School subjects, take modules from other departments e.g. Economics, or study a language. Term three: Revision and exams.

How will I learn?

You will learn in a variety of ways – primarily through a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and online learning.

Contact hours

This varies by year but you will have approximately 12-15 hours per week of class time, plus student support and feedback hours.

Class size

Class sizes vary by module: there can be up to 500 students in lectures (mainly year 1) and then around 25 in seminars. Some electives are much smaller.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a combination of examinations and on-going assessments, which may include essays, research assignments, projects, case study analysis, class tests, presentations and group work. "It has motivated me to become a better version of myself."

The best thing about my course is the quality of the content I am taught by my lecturers. It is amazing to see how knowledgeable they are in the subjects they teach and the support they are willing to offer.

WBS is very innovative and I have been exposed to different methods of teaching and learning which has helped me in the transition from college to university.

I have been inspired by the creative approach that WBS takes to education, and it has motivated me to become a better version of myself.

My experience so far has been enjoyable and challenging, and has given me the determination to make the most of the amazing opportunities that are available to me.
