Accounting and Finance at Warwick is a professionally-orientated qualification, providing the skills, knowledge and confidence to operate effectively in the fast-paced world of multinational companies and global financial markets. Choosing particular module combinations can lead to exemptions from a number of professional accountancy exams.
Course overview
This four-year course is designed to provide you with access to our main Accounting and Finance degree if challenging circumstances mean that you haven’t been able to meet the entry requirements for our standard Accounting and Finance BSc. We are looking for applicants who have the drive and motivation, and ultimately want to progress to a professionally-orientated qualification that is consistently ranked highly in major UK league tables.
We'll help you to develop valuable skills such as teamwork, presenting, time management, problem solving, decision making, and also build your confidence. You’ll be part of a small community working closely together on group projects. The course also involves working with external organisations to give you a better understanding of how business works. You will complete a project in the third term working with an organisation to identify an issue or challenge.
If you successfully complete the Foundation Year, you will automatically join our direct entry students following the course structure for Accounting and Finance. The course structure for Accounting and Finance provides you with the opportunity to choose electives designed to allow you to specialise in finance or accounting.
Course structure
Our Foundation Year prepares you for degree-level study at WBS and gives students the opportunity to build their knowledge about business, improve some key skills we have found to be important to success during the undergraduate degree, and spend a year getting used to the university environment.
We provide a diverse programme of events and activities, such as off campus visits to businesses, guest lectures, careers workshops, and service projects, that build your confidence and can be experiences you draw from when you move on to degree level study.
You will need drive and dedication to your studies to progress through the course but will receive a great deal of support from our dedicated team of academic faculty, personal tutors, former foundation year student mentors, and our administrative staff.
If you successfully complete the Foundation Year, you will automatically progress to BSc Accounting and Finance and join our direct entry students in Year One.
Important information
We are making some exciting changes to the Foundation Year (Year Zero) of our Accounting and Finance with Foundation Year degree for 2021 entry. Our core modules are currently undergoing approval through the University's rigorous academic processes. As more modules are confirmed, we will include them in the core module list.
How will I learn?
You will learn in a variety of ways – primarily through a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops and online learning.
Contact hours
This varies by year but you will have approximately 15 hours per week of class time, plus student support and feedback hours.
Class size
The Foundation Year typically recruits 25 students who work together and in smaller groups. On progressing to Year One lectures become larger with up to 500 students in a class and around 25 in seminars.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through a combination of examinations and on-going assessments, which may include essays, research assignments, projects, case study analysis, class tests, presentations and group work. The final degree classification is determined by your second and final year marks and each contributes 50%.
Study abroad
The following WBS degrees enable you to spend time studying abroad:
- International Management
- International Business with French
- International Business with German
- International Business with Italian
- International Business with Spanish
Study abroad is not a requirement of Accounting and Finance, nor is it guaranteed. However if there are places available once allocations have been made to the students on the above courses, Accounting and Finance students may be considered.
General entry requirements
You must meet at least two of the Widening Participation criteria listed on the WBS website.

Widening Participation
You must meet at least two of the following Widening Participation Criteria:
1. Having spent time in local-authority care. (Applicants meeting this criterion are not required to meet any of the other criteria below).
2. Attending a school where average performance of students achieving 5 A*-C GCSE including English and Mathematics was below the national average and/or attending a school/college with below the national average performance at KS5.
3. Attending a school or college with above national average entitlement/eligibility to Free School Meals.
4. Living in a low participation neighbourhood (POLAR 3, quintile 1) or an area which has a high level of deprivation (Index of Multiple Deprivation, 0-20%).
5. Being a first-generation entrant to higher education i.e. neither parent has attended university.

A level:
- Complete and pass three full A level courses excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. These should include a higher-level quantitative subject, such as Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Calculus and Statistics.
- You will also need grade B/6 in GCSE English Language, B/6 in GCSE Mathematics and C/4 in five other GCSE subjects. Applicants with grade C/4 in GCSE English Language and grade B/6 in GCSE English Literature will also be considered.
IB:
- Completion of three subjects at Higher Level and three subjects at Standard Level. These should include a higher-level quantitative subject, such as Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Calculus and Statistics.
- You will also need grade B/6 in GCSE English Language, B/6 in GCSE Mathematics and C/4 in five other GCSE subjects. Applicants with grade C/4 in GCSE English Language and grade B/6 in GCSE English Literature will also be considered.
BTEC:
- Complete and pass a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma. You should have studied a higher-level quantitative subject, such as Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Calculus and Statistics.
- You will also need grade B/6 in GCSE English Language, B/6 in GCSE Mathematics and C/4 in five other GCSE subjects. Applicants with grade C/4 in GCSE English Language and grade B/6 in GCSE English Literature will also be considered.
