Diversity, Equality, Inclusion, and Climate Crisis
The Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at Warwick has a long-standing and unquestionable commitment to equality, diversity, and democracy. We incorporate equality into our core objectives, as well as scholarly and critical reflection on questions of gender, diversity, and ecology. This is reflected at all levels.
Our MA programmes address these concerns both as specific programmes, such as the MA on Environmental Humanities, the MA on Critical & Cultural Theory and the MA on World Literature, and in individual seminars such as ‘Queer Theory & Praxis’, ‘Feminist Literary Theory’, ‘Petrofiction: Studies in World Literature’, ‘Critical Environments’ and ‘Critical Theory, Culture, Resistance’. If you are worried about MA programmes closing or limiting the study and teaching of cultural dignity and environmental literacy, fear not! At Warwick we welcome you and will ensure the continuation of our historical legacy of going beyond the past’s limits.
We offer three main degrees: English Literature, English and Theatre Studies, and English and History. Across all our teaching, we’ll help you to view literature as a way of seeing the world with more clarity.

We offer four distinct MA programmes, and with a thriving cohort of research students working across literary studies, our department is a great place to pursue your research ambitions.
We are ranked in the top 10 UK universities for research environment (2021 Research Excellence Framework); and 91% of our research is rated 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (see the Times Higher Education). We are one of the top 30 English departments in the world in the QS World Subject Rankings (2022).
