MA in Gender, Literature and Modernity

Passed with distinction. Taught by Terry Lovell, Germaine Greer etc. Funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council. Specialist interests in feminism and the body, Victorian poetry and contemporary poetry. My 20,000 word dissertation was on women poets (Amy Lowell, Mina Loy and Elinor Wylie) and the modernist war of the sexes.

BA in English Literature and Creative Writing

AWARDS

The English Association Fellows' Prize (2007)

First prize.

 

Shortlisted for the Feminist and Women's Studies Association (FWSA) Graduate Essay Competition (2007)

The essay was titled, 'Confessing the Secrets of Others: Pascale Petit's Poetic Employment of Latin American Cultures and the Mexican Artist, Frida Kahlo'. At the end of this year, it will be published in a special issue of the Journal for International Women's Studies (JIWS).
 

Humanities Research Centre Bursary (2006-2007)

Joint award with Jonathan Morley to organise a conference.

 

The Welsh Academy: Bursary (2005)

I was awarded £1000 in March 2005 to research Mexican culture and finish my first collection of poetry, The Secret.

 

Eric Gregory Award (2003)

I was awarded £5000 for my poetry from the Society of Authors in London.

 

Fellowship with University of East Anglia (2001)

This involved the Centre for Translation in Tarazona, Spain, where my poetry was translated into Spanish.

 

The Derek Walcott Prize for Creative Writing (2001)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have worked in a number of educational institutions. I have run Creative Writing workshops in schools, colleges, universities and at the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Children. I teach on the creative writing modules, The Practice of Poetry and Modes of Writing at Warwick University. I also have experience of teaching English Literature and I now teach on courses such as Academic Writing as well as Poetry and Society at Warwick University.

PUBLICATION OF PROSE

With regards to my academic writing, most recently, I am publishing a critical paper in A Critical Survey this autumn entitled 'Replication, Regeneration or Organic Birth: the Clone in Deryn Rees-Jones’ Quiver and Donna Haraway’s ‘A Cyborg Manifesto’ '. I freelance for New Design Magazine. I have published reviews in Leviathan Quarterly and Acumen and I have recently started writing reviews for Mslexia. I also write for a number of literary webzines.

PUBLICATION OF POETRY

My poetry has been published in:

  • journals such as The New Welsh Review, Poetry Wales, Leviathan Quarterly, Stride, Skald, Scintilla, Agenda Broadsheet etc.,
  • and anthologies such as Seren Selections, Reactions, Phoenix New Writing, The Gift and Poetry Wales 40 Years.

I have also read my poetry at a variety of venues including:

  • arts centres such as the Poetry Café in London, the Orange Studio in Birmingham, Warwick Art Centre, The Blue Room in Newcastle and Chapter Art Centre, Cardiff;
  • and festivals such as Ledbury Poetry Festival, Coventry’s Godiva Festival and the Green Man Folk Festival.

I have also chaired discussions with poets such as Wendy Cope, Carol Ann Duffy, Jo Shapcott and Simon Rae at Warwick Art Centre.
