This module introduces students to the tumultuous years of revolution and counter-revolution in Europe in the wake of World War I, and to the radical political movements that emerged out of these conflicts. It studies revolutions in Russia and Germany, counter-revolutionary violence in East-Central Europe, and the Rise of Fascism in Italy. The second part of the module inquires about attempts to defend and overthrow democracy by the late 1920s and early 1930s, focusing on the embattled democracy of Weimar Germany and the Popular Fronts in France and Spain.
