World Reimagined

Fire and Fury globe

In 2021, Abigail Coppins was approached by the Saint Lucian artist and activist Fiona Compton, to provide a list of names for a globe that Fiona was designing as part of the World Reimagined globe project https://www.theworldreimagined.org/globes/).

This initiative resulted in the creation of 103 unique globes, displayed in seven UK cities, and featuring themes such as "Mother Africa," "Abolition and Emancipation," and "A Complex Triangle.". Fiona’s globe is entitled ‘Fire and Fury’.

Abigail contributed a list of names of Saint Lucians who, in 1796, had been taken as prisoners of war, transported to Britain and imprisoned at Portchester Castle. Fiona selected names from this list and inscribed them onto the globe which has since been exhibited in Trafalgar Square and Leeds.

The names were replicated exactly as they appeared in French registers, which were created after these individuals were released from Portchester prison and sent to France. This intentional approach highlighted the complexities involved in identifying individuals within historical records while also bringing attention to the ongoing journeys of these people.
