After I obtained a BA Hons Degree in French, Russian and Spanish at Coventry University, I began to work in international logistics. I worked for a company that specialised in the transportation of heavy plant and concrete machinery which was a world leader in its field. I was responsible for the efficient and timely delivery of various types of machinery throughout most of France, Spain, Germany and Dubai. I later obtained the Freight Transport Association’s Certificate of Professional Competence in International Road Haulage operations which covered all aspects of International road traffic laws and provided me with a recognised licence to run a transport department.
I was then approached by the British Transport Police Authorities to assist them as an interpreter in their investigations into the illegal transportation of stolen high value goods across European borders. I found this very interesting and decided to obtain a Diploma in Public Sector Interpreting & Translating to provide me with the appropriate legal language that is used in the Law Courts of the United Kingdom.
I later moved into education and wanted to provide people with a language skill that would be useful in their future employment. I designed a course and marketed it through the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce where I made lots of useful contacts and provided several companies with in-house training. I now divide my time between teaching on various Spanish language modules at Warwick University and interpreting and translating for various authorities in all types of legal matters.
