Module Description

This module explores the so-called Generación del 27, a group of young artists whose aesthetic innovations challenged the artistic, social and sexual norms of early-twentieth century Spain. It focusses in particular on the relationship between theatre, cinema and painting, examining how these different forms intersected and mutually influenced one another during this period.

Through the study of plays by Federico García Lorca, selected paintings by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró and Maruja Mallo, as well as Luis Buñuel’s surrealist films, the module explores how these artists broke away from traditional forms of representation. It considers how these works responded to rapid technological change and an uncertain world, while also situating Spain’s avant-garde in connection to other European modernisms.
