Tribute to Professor Nicholas Hewitt

French Studies at Warwick was saddened to learn of the recent death of Professor Nicholas Hewitt. Nick was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in French at Warwick between 1973 and 1988 before going on to a Chair in French at the University of Nottingham. Nick was a specialist on French literature and culture of the 1930s and was a popular teacher at Warwick known for his entertaining lectures. He introduced to the department a module for external (social science) students on the study of contemporary France and he was instrumental in the development of the field of French cultural studies within the UK. Together with Brian Rigby, Nick launched the journal French Cultural Studies in 1990, which is still going strong as it approaches its thirtieth anniversary.
