Knots

Keynote Speaker Dr Emily Henderson, University of Warwick, Department for Education Studies

Warwick SMLC Postgraduate Symposium

24 May 2024

The Wolfson Research Exchange, Library, Floor 3

Since ancient times, knots have been used in China to record events. An old saying goes, ‘The bigger the event, the larger the knot.’ Similarly, in nautical terminology, knots are a measure of speed dating back to the 17th century. Knots represent a moment in time and place.

In many languages, the verb to knot can also figure the establishing of connections: in French, for example, nouer des liens: knots can be constructive, formative.

Binding with knots can, however, be restrictive: knots can be tied to prevent escape or release; we can be ‘tied up’ or ‘tied down’. In the body, a knot is a site of often painful muscular spasm.

A knot, in wood, is an imperfection formed as the branch of a tree falls away. Many people consider these knots to be beautiful, adding character to the appearance of the wood, whereas others regard knots as a blemish that equally causes a defect in the strength of the lumber.

We invite you to consider presenting your research at the SMLC Postgraduate Symposium 2024 in the form of a reflection on knots in any of their linguistic or cultural connotations.

These could include, but are not limited to:

  • Knots as aesthetic objects
  • Knots used for safety and security
  • Knots as symbols

We welcome proposals for papers in the following formats:

  • 15 minute presentations by Postgraduate research students followed by 5 minute Q&A

  • 5 minute flash presentations by Postgraduate taught students

Abstracts should be 250-300 words in length, excluding references, and include a 100 word bio of the presenter. All proposals should be sent as Microsoft word .doc files. Submissions should be sent to the organising committee atsmlcpgrsymposium@gmail.comby 1stApril 2024.
