FAQ's
Why should my school take part?
We are all aware of the challenging position of language study in the UK and we want to have a positive impact on the MFL pipeline from GCSE through to A’ Level, HE study and the recruitment of a new generation of MFL teachers. We believe High Flying Linguists will have a positive and aspirational effect on the students, renewing their enthusiasm for study more generally and enabling them to explore the links between languages and other subjects including career progression. HFL will improve the profile of languages across the participating schools through promoting the strong link with a local Russell Group university. Students selected will feel proud to be chosen and keen to share their learning and promote languages to younger year groups as ambassadors.
What will the students gain from taking part?
We anticipate that students will feel a sense of pride to be specially selected by their schools to take part. In turn we hope that the interactions across the year will impact positively their overall commitment to their studies, their self confidence, their language skills and their career aspirations. Students will also gain enrichment from learning outside of the classroom, interacting with peers from other schools and working alongside our student ambassadors who are excellent role models.
How many students can my school enrol on High Flying Linguists?
We estimate that each school will be able to enrol between 5-8 students total. The students MUST commit to attending ALL the sessions run at Warwick and schools must commit to arranging the termly visits including suitable transportation and accompanying teachers. Warwick will provide sample letters to explain and promote the benefits of the programme to the selected students' parents and provide safeguarding risk assessments.
What is the cost involved?
There will be NO additional cost attached to this programme for schools. We just expect transport to the University campus to be covered by the school and sufficient numbers of accompanying teachers to campus events. Light refreshments will be provided for all campus visits and students and staff would be expected to bring their own lunches.
What does my school need to commit to?
Invited schools need to commit to bringing the selected students to campus on the allocated event days (1-2 per term) across the full academic year, ensuring that all students complete the pre and post surveys for our evaluations.
