Boys in Languages Research Project
Context
Within the current context of decline in the language sector in the UK, research shows that boys in particular are less likely to be encouraged to study languages, and are also less likely to enjoy the subject, to view it as useful, and to see themselves as successful even when making adequate progress (Barton, 1999; Clark, 1995; Mills and Tinsley, 2020; Schmenk, 2004; Thompson and Mutton, 2022). The problem of uptake and performance in languages for boys has also been identified as a national issue by the recently-formed, and government-funded National Consortium for Languages EducationLink opens in a new window. Nevertheless, there have been relatively few recent studies of the different perceptions of language study amongst boys and girls at secondary level, and therefore a tendency to respond anecdotally in efforts to improve motivation (eg: assumptions that boys like competitions or should be encouraged with workshops on sport, etc.).
Our project
This is a collaborative project focusing on pupils in Year 10 across a variety of schools in the vicinity of Warwick, Banbury and Durham and has as its main aim examining motivation and volition between boys and girls in the language classroom. The information obtained will be used to enhance Widening Participation and Outreach initiatives run by the Schools of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Warwick and the University of Durham. We will share our findings with participating schools.
How will it work?
All pupils in a class are asked to complete a short anonymous online survey (both boys and girls where the class is mixed, so that we can compare the data from each group). The survey will take about 10 minutes. The online platform for the survey will be Qualtrics, and this will be accessible via a web URL that teachers can give to pupils.
The survey will go live in mid February (around half term).
How can you help?
We are looking for schools to run the short survey with their year 10 classes. Please tell us if you would be interested in participating by completing the very short form here.
