About

I studied at the University of Birmingham, with an intercalated year at Hamburg University, and on graduating in 1971 I was awarded the Karl Damann Prize for German. In 1972 I completed an MA in Modern German Studies at the University of Warwick and a PhD in German Studies in 1978. I took up a post as Lecturer in German Studies at Warwick in 1974 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1989, Reader in 1996 and gained a personal chair in 1999. From 1995 until 1999 I was a Visiting Fellow in the Institute of German Studies at the University of Birmingham. In 1993 I became a (founder) member of the editorial board of Debatte – Review of Contemporary German Affairs, a membership I have retained on its successor, Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe. I have been Head of the German Department at Warwick on three occasions, 1991–1994, 1999–2001 and 2007–2012. I am now Professor Emeritus in German.

Research interests

My research falls into three main areas:

  1. I have a long-standing interest in the history of German working-class culture, encompassing the vibrant worker-culture movement that thrived in the Weimar Republic and the post-war manifestations of working-class literature in the Federal Republic.
  2. Secondly, I have researched the broad area of protest and extra-parliamentary politics in the Federal Republic, including the student movement, the peace movement, the political manifestations of feminism and the environmentalist and ecological movement.
  3. Most recently I have worked in the field of diasporic culture in contemporary Germany with particular emphasis on the development of ‘migrant’ or ‘Turkish-German’ cinema. I am currently engaged on a joint monograph (with Jim Jordan) on diasporic literature and film.
