The Big Read

The Big Read is a Warwick-wide event to celebrate books and reading across all generations: The Big Read - Day — Resonate Festival. In the SMLC, we embraced this opportunity to share foreign-language storytelling with open arms!

We ran two events:

The Big Read – Night: Fairy tales and retelling – how traditional tales are inflected by cultural difference (talk and discussion looking at how traditional fairy stories like Red Riding Hood vary across Europe and are changed and adapted across time).

The Big Read – Day: an interactive multi-lingual Harry Potter session for children aged 8+. We had huge fun trying to guess languages from Harry Potter book covers and exploring challenges like how to translate names loaded with meaning, like ‘Hufflepuff’, ‘Slytherin’ and ‘Diagon Alley’.

Please find below some bookish language activities. Click on the languages to get started.

Do you know the name of these books in different languages? Click on each language on the right side to learn more.
