Get ready for an incredible student experience
We have pioneered the study of film and television criticism, history and theory since the 1970s. In that time, we have built up an impressive range of brilliant resources which will be at the heart of your experience with us.
Viewing
We pride ourselves on being able to screen films and television programmes in a format that is as close as possible to how audiences would have originally seen them.
The department offers cinema-standard facilities in its screening rooms, two of which are equipped with 35mm and 16mm film projectors alongside DVD and Blu-Ray equipment. Our main lecture theatre is fitted with a cinema-quality 4k digital projector. We have access to the newly-refurbished Warwick Arts Centre cinema which offers 4K projection and Dolby Atmos surround sound.
Students will also have access to dedicated IT facilities, Steenbeck viewing tables, and digital video equipment (including DVD, Blu-Ray, VHS and online streaming) in various departmental rooms. Graduate students have a special study room which includes viewing and seminar preparation facilities, and a Radio Times collection.
Library
Our library has one of the largest collections of film and television-related books in the country, providing access all the major books in the field in the English language as well as substantial holdings in French, German and Italian.
We subscribe to all the major scholarly journals including Cahiers du cinéma, Cinema Journal, Movie, Screen, Positif, as well as trade and fan periodicals like Broadcast, Picturegoer, and Variety.
We also hold over 25,000 VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K titles.
You will enjoy subscriptions to all major film databases, including BFI Film Index International and the FIAF index, and you can use the Library's plasma screen viewing facilities too.
Campus, regional and national facilities
The Warwick Arts Centre has regular cinema screenings, recently undergoing a major redevelopment, and now includes three new digital auditoria. The university’s Language Centre offers audio-visual facilities, computer-assisted learning, satellite television, and a dedicated library.
Regionally you'll have access to many multiplex and repertory cinemas in Coventry (Odeon, Showcase), Leamington Spa (Vue, Royal Spa Centre) and Birmingham (Odeon, The Mockingbird Cinema, Everyman, Cineworld etc.).
Birmingham is also the host city of the Birmingham Film Festival and Flatpack Film Festival.
London is just over an hour away by train, meaning that a visit to the British Film Institute library and mediateque, the National Archives or the British Library are all within easy reach.
Staff-student ratio
We have an excellent staff-student ratio with around 12 students to each member of staff.
In addition to course and module leaders, you’ll have a personal tutor to support for any issues you might have, either academic or more generally, helping to keep you on track with your studies.
If you choose the dissertation option in your third year you’ll also have a dissertation tutor to guide you through this important piece of work and help you develop the extended research skills you’ll need.
