ECR STA, 30 March-5 April 2025, at Warwick's Venice Centre has been a success!
Warwick's Sustainability Training Academy (STA) in Venice (WVC) has now come to a close, but what an event it was bringing together 21 ECRs from 13 countries, to share and develop their creative skills, and engage with critical theories and interdisciplinary methods! Blue skies, organic food from Sant'Erasmo farm, and new CA'Foscari friends; amazing cookies from Chiara at WVC and loads of pasta, pizza and aperol spritz - what else you could wish for!! All of these however was made so special and possible by the whole bunch of people and we at IGSD are indebted to them - Prof Harini Nagendra, Dr Bryan Brazeau, Dr Harriet Richmond, Dr Adela Glyn-Davies, Nargiz Ismayilova, Dr Anar Valiyev, and Dr Fariz Ismailzade!
We are also immensely fortunate to gather such a fantastic group of ECRs, and we hope to keep in touch with every single one of them! We are also grateful to our former ECR @TieazaSantos from NASA Open Science, for sharing NASA learning resources with us, and to everyone who made this STA a success, including the support from Warwick's Sustainability Spotlight and COP29 Scientific Council Azerbaijan. Watch the space for 2026!
Warwick's Sustainability Training School is about to kick off!
Between 30 March – 5 April 2025, over 21 next-generation climate leaders from eight countries (and 13 nationalities), will attend Warwick’s pioneering Sustainability Training Academy in Venice. Launched in 2023 by the Institute of Global Sustainable Development (IGSD), and supported by the COP29 Scientific Council, the Sustainability Training Academy equips early career researchers (ECRs) with the interdisciplinary analytical, methodological, and practical skills needed to address the systemic challenges of climate change, climate justice and climate transition.

Climate Knowledge Production Cafe, 28 November 2024
IGSD organised its first of the NEXUS series event: an immersive and thought-provoking world cafe session designed to challenge and reimagine the way we produce and share climate knowledge. It brought together researchers and thinkers from across and beyond Warwick, including our international guests Prof. Harini Nagendra, Director School for Climate Change and Sustainability, and Justine Marchant, Soka Gakkai International UK. The event was followed by an exhibition 'the Seeds of Hope' at 16.30 and a writing session at 18.00 at the FAB.
Our special thanks go to Emellyne and Hita for organising the event, and the Sustainability Spotlight, for supporting it.
IGSD Network away day
IGSD had a network away day, with a facilitator Dr Paula Black, to review its strategy and identify roadmaps for growing further, including its Thematic and Honorary Fellows' networks. The Away Day took place at the Junction, and was informative as to ways forward, including how to better integrate and contribute to the Sustainability Spotlight Initiative, going forward.
Sustainability Spotlight Network+ Initiative - is live now!
Sustainability Spotlight Network+ Initiative During the Warwick Research Culture Day on 29 April 2024, the new interdisciplinary Spotlight Initiatives were launched to replace GRPs and to drive the university forward into a new REF landscape. One of them - Sustainability Spotlight - was won by a collective of researchers, led by IGSD. Sustainability Spotlight is set to be a network-of-networks, focusing on research on sustainability. In addition to IGSD, it includes 4 other networks – the Environmental Humanities Network (led by Prof. Graeme Macdonald, Faculty of Arts), the Sustainable Society Network (led by Prof. Giuliana Battisti, WBS), WESIC (led by Prof. Gary Bending, Life Sciences) and WMG Materials & Innovation Network (led by Associate Prof. Stuart Coles) – and brings together over 2000 researchers! We aim for the network to be all-inclusive, and its objectives are:
We are planning to have an informal launch in early July, and everyone whose research focuses on sustainability is warmly welcome! We will announce the programme soon. Please follow us on https://warwick.ac.uk/research/spotlights/sustainability/. |
