Prospective students who wish to apply for MGS DTP funding from the University of Warwick should first apply to the University to study for a research degree by completing an online application for PhD admission.

The University of Warwick also provides information on Finding a Supervisor, which prospective applicants may find useful to read. Please note that all ESRC DTP students will have at least two supervisors and in order to be considered for ESRC DTP funding you must have identified two supervisors.

Please see below for information on each of the ESRC DTP pathways available at the University of Warwick, including details of which research degree you should apply for if you want to apply for DTP funding under that pathway at the University of Warwick.

ESRC DTP Pathways offered at the University of Warwick

Applied Linguistics

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Applied Linguistics pathway should submit an application for one of the following: MPhil/PhD in Applied Linguistics, MPhil/PhD in Discourse Studies, MPhil/PhD in English Language Teaching, MPhil/PhD in English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics or MPhil/PhD in Intercultural Communication depending on your area of research interests within Applied Linguistics.

Area Studies

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Area Studies pathway should submit an application for a MPhil/PhD in Politics and International Studies.

Cross-disciplinary Methodologies and Advanced Data Analysis

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Cross-disciplinary Methodologies and Advanced Data Analysis pathway should submit an application to the pathway department in which your project would be based or for a MPhil/PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies if your lead supervisor is based in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies.

Economic & Social History

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Economic & Social History pathway should submit an application for a MPhil/PhD in History.

Economics

Structure of provision: PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Economics pathway at Warwick will need to be currently undertaking the MRes Programme, which precedes the PhD research programme in Economics and is a compulsory part of the Economics PhD offering at the University of Warwick. Where a student has completed an MRes elsewhere, incoming students may request a waiver for direct entry to the PhD.

Prospective students who wish to undertake a PhD in Economics at the University of Warwick should apply to undertake the MRes programme. The Department of Economics may offer funding opportunities to students who are offered a place on the MRes programme. If a student is offered financial support for the MRes this will consist of a fee waiver and a maintenance award from the Economics Department. During the second year of the MRes, eligible students can apply for ESRC DTP funding under the Economics Pathway.

Education

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Education pathway should submit an application for either a MPhil/PhD in Education (based in the Department of Education Studies) or a MPhil/PhD in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (based in the Centre for Research in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) depending on your area of research interests within Education.

Health & Wellbeing

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Health and Wellbeing pathway should submit an application for a MPhil/PhD in Health Sciences.

Living in a Digital Society

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Living in a Digital Society pathway should submit an application to the pathway department in which your project would be based.

Management & Business Studies

Structure of provision: Masters + PhD funding or PhD-only funding either full-time or part-time

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Management & Business Studies pathway at Warwick will need to apply to either Warwick Business School (WBS) or the Warwick Institute for Employment Research (IER), depending on your area of research interests within Management & Business Studies. The application process will vary depending on which department you are applying to, so please read the below carefully.

Prospective students who wish to undertake a PhD in Business & Management in WBS should apply to undertake the MRes programme of the MRes/PhD Business & Management, which precedes the PhD research programme in Business & Management and is a compulsory part of the Business & Management PhD offering at WBS. The MRes is fully funded by WBS and this support consists of a full fee waiver and a maintenance award. During the second year of the MRes, eligible students can apply for ESRC DTP funding for their PhD under the Management & Business Studies branch of the pathway.

The MRes and PhD are intended as full-time programmes, as WBS want their students to become full members of their academic community. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis for successful MGS students, students with caring responsibilities, and individuals with specific circumstances. You can apply to study part-time for the whole or part of the PhD element of the programme (final three years).

Prospective students wishing to apply for funding under the Management & Business Studies pathway in IER should submit an application for a MPhil/PhD in Employment Research.
