Aims and Learning Outcomes
Appreciate the importance of effective medical leadership and understand the characteristics of effective leadership in health care organisations
Learn to:
- Critically appraise the applicability and relevance of a range of research literature, policy documents and commentary for medical professionals in leadership positions
- Demonstrate a systematic critical understanding of the ways in which medical professionals successfully engage with leadership and teamworking
- Use concepts of power, negotiation and conflict resolution in the critical analysis of complex organisational structures in health care
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of how performance management, appraisal, mentoring and coaching contribute to medical leadership, in the context of the expectations of the General Medical Council and the National Clinical Assessment Service
- Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the factors that lead to success for a thriving hospital Trust and of the relationships between Trusts and external organisations.
Module syllabus
Each course will consist of 30 hours of structured learning activity, as lectures and seminars over 4 days:
Day 1 | Leadership and teams – roles, functions and theories. Medical engagement in leadership |
Day 2 | Organisational structures, with reference to power, negotiation and conflict resolution |
Day 3 | Managing others – performance, appraisal, coaching and mentoring. The roles of the General Medical Council and the National Clinical Assessment Service |
Day 4 |
'The successful Trust and leadership'; perspective of senior staff, and relationships with other organisations |
