Energy Materials Projects
Advanced analytical techniques applied to energy materials
Applicants are invited to apply for an Analytical Sciences CDT joint MSc and PhD (1+3 route) focused on the application of advanced analytical techniques to energy materials development. Applicants will have a choice of mini-research projects and PhD projects in the areas of:
- Solar cells (Photovoltaics)
Dr Ross Hatton, Chemistry
Professor John Murphy, Engineering
- Advanced polymer nanocomposites for energy applications
Dr Chaoying Wan, Warwick Manufacturing Group
- Battery materials
Professor Shanwen Tao, Engineering
Dr Melanie Loveridge, Warwick Manufacturing Group
The analytical techniques used and industrial advisor(s) for the project will depend on the specific project/supervisor. Examples of analytical techniques include: small angle x-ray scattering, core level and valence level photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (which is very useful to analyse battery materials), photo-conductance carrier lifetime measurements and photoluminescence imaging differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, gas phase chromatography, NMR, ferroelectric test system.
Examples of industrial advisors for mini-projects include: Oxford Instruments Asylum Research (https://afm.oxinst.com/) and KP Technologies (https://www.kelvinprobe.com/) (projects with Dr Hatton) and Multi-drive Ltd (projects with Prof Tao) (https://multidrivevehicles.com/).
