Student-led Programme drives Chemistry community engagement

We are Chemistry

Co-created programme recognised for increasing belonging

'We are Chemistry' showcased for Warwick's TEF Gold celebrations and covered by THE.

We are proud to share that the work of our Chemistry colleagues has been recognised and used as one of the University’s TEF Gold case studies and in a recent article for the Times Higher Education (THE).

The ‘We are ChemistryLink opens in a new window’ programme was first developed and co-created by Dr Tom Ritchie, Adam Alcock, and a student, Jessica Man.

The programme focuses on collaborating with students to co-create different aspects of their experience to increase their sense of belonging in the department. In its first year, the programme focused on four themes: 'Feel Good, Have Fun, Learn More, and Get Active', engaging thousands of students in Chemistry and beyond. This success was recognised by the University of Warwick's 'Wonders and Wows' in January 2023, and commended in the University's Warwick Awards for Teaching Excellence, for its innovative collaborative approach, which helped transform the student experience in Chemistry.

Tom said of these accolades,

“We couldn’t have done this work without our incredible students; collaborating and co-creating with them on all different aspects of the student experience has been a game-changer for our community. We want to thank all of the students who have helped with the programme since the beginning!”

In its second year, We are Chemistry has recruited four new student interns - Ayra Kaisar, Sam Poole, Jack Williams, and Aashna Dwyer - who have worked with Tom and Adam to co-create a new programme, focusing on wellbeing support, academic skills and success, and careers and skills opportunities.

The We are Chemistry programme has activities planned every Wednesday from 1-3pm on the Science Concourse during term time, as well as other events at different times throughout the week. All of these events are free to attend; you can find out more about them here.
