Eleni Bitziou

 Biography

Eleni obtained her BSc Hon in Chemistry from the University of Leicester. She then went on to complete her MSc in Instrumental and Analytical Methods in Chemistry (IAMBEC) from the University of Warwick. After a gap year in Greece working at PepsiCo-HBH she returned to the UK to start her PhD in the Warwick Electrochemistry and Interfaces Group led by Prof Patrick Unwin and Prof Julie Macpherson. The PhD was funded by EPSRC and received an outstanding overall rating. The thesis title was 'Development and Applications of Microelectrodes in Hydrodynamic and Photoelectrochemical Systems'.

I then took on a three year RA position at Imperial College London working for Danny O'Hare at the department of Bioengineering. My project was sponsored by IPSO Ventures and my research interests included novel techniques for medical applications and in perticular integration of biosensors on tissue/wound monitoring/healing. I developed a biocompatible miniature-size sensors based on a metal/metal oxide pH sensitive films (U.K. Patent filed - May 2009).

Currently I work on an exciting new project between the internationally-leading Polymer Group led by Prof. David Haddleton and the Electrochemistry and Interfaces Group (Profs. Pat Unwin and Julie Macpherson) to examine and develop two broadly applicable methods of analysis: (i) Near infra-red absorption spectroscopy (NIRAS) and (ii) innovative electroanalytical methods.

The overall goal of the project is to determine the accuracy of the techniques and their robustness, especially for quantitative component analysis in real samples.
