Outreach in Life Sciences

Hello from the School of Life Sciences Outreach Team

Outreach activities in Life Sciences are fun and designed to be accessible for all. We aim to help students with little experience of higher education discover their potential. Under normal circumstances, we offer schools and colleges a range of opportunities, from practical hands-on lab sessions to lectures, to inspire students to explore the world of bioscience. We work with Foundation Stage (Reception Year) up to Sixth Form students and also offer Professional Development sessions for teachers via Warwick CTE.

Over the past year we have delivered outreach to over 2,000 students from approximately 100 schools across the country. If you would like to get involved or book an online session, please use our online form below to register your interest.

We look forward to hearing from you, if you have any queries please contact us via email SLS dot Outreach at warwick dot ac dot uk

Subject to availability, we are happy to discuss other requirements you might have and may also be able to provide training for teachers. For example we have also provided "DinoDig" experience days for two West Midlands primary schools and with the Fun Palaces organisation and, in collaboration with the The Shakespeare Birthplace Education Trust, recently presented the history and biology of Plague - from 1340s, through Shakespeare's Europe to Present day emergence and epidemics. Please complete the registration of interest form to let us know what you would like to do!

Is it possible to book a talk/lecture?

We offer a wide range of research specialities within the School of Life Sciences and offer an annual Christmas lecture which is open to all. We are occasionally able to offer speakers on subjects by request, which can be delivered online.

Recent examples of talks include:

  • Breathing with your Brain
  • Neurodegenerative Disease
  • Biological Rhythms
  • Synthetic Biology

Do you offer Work Experience Placements?

Please see work experience for updates, details and to apply. Work placements are offered at the discretion of academics within the department.

Resources for the classroom

Professor Lorenzo Frigerio, a plant cell biologist in the School of Life Sciences, has written 'The Vacuole Song' with colleagues from Oxford Brookes University. The song and accompanying video were developed to help students in secondary schools to understand these intracellular compartments in plants and how they function.

Upcoming events: Researchers from the School of Life Sciences and Warwick Medical School will be returning with new topics, new findings, and new stories to share! Find out more

Hear from Dr Leanne Williams, a Senior Teaching Fellow, about her involvement in the School's outreach activities, which have reached over 2,000 children from more than 100 schools in the last year alone. She tells us what she loves about working with young people in the most recent 50@50 blog.
