Professor Margaret Thorogood

Margaret was appointed Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Warwick in 2003 and she is also Director of Research Degrees for Warwick Medical School. She is a member of the NHS HTA Disease Prevention Panel, and has served on two NICE Guideline Development Groups related to the management of dilipidaemia. Margaret is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health.

During her lecture, Margaret will be looking back over more than 35 years of her research, and looking forward to new challenges. The academic field of epidemiology has expanded beyond recognition, largely fuelled by rapidly changing technology.

Margaret will describe her work on three major themes:

• Drug safety, particularly the cardiovascular risk of oral contraceptives
• Risk factors for heart disease, particularlly the identification and treatment of familial hyperlipidaemia
• The epidemiological transition in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the implications for the health of the elderly and the emerging epidemic of cardiovascular disease

Venue and time

Each lecture will be held in the Medical Teaching Centre Lecture Theatre, Gibbet Hill Campus, and start at 6:00pm. The lecture will last an hour and will be followed by a drinks reception.
