Transplanting the Un-transplantableThe object of Professor Higgins career has been to improve the lives of people with kidney failure. He is almost exactly the same age as successful kidney transplantation, which has only been possible since the 1950s. His lecture will traverse their respective childhoods to a coming of age when he qualified in medicine and the anti-rejection drug cyclosporine transformed success rates. He will describe the advancements made against antibodies and the largely won battle against lymphocyte medicated rejection, showing the exciting results from current research at the University of Warwick. He will discuss the establishment of the world’s first National Registry and largest biobank of samples for patient transplants across antibody barriers by the University of Warwick and partners’. If this wasn’t enough he’ll also touch on birdsong, archaeology, Dennis Lillee and Geoffrey Boycott, the pigs that nearly were and freezing fish. |
