Whilst a full whole body calorimeter is the gold-standard device for measuring metabolic profiles, it is often useful to have the ability to analyse respiration on a breath-by-breath basis.

For this the HMRU has a Cortex Metalyzer 3B. This features breath by breath and intra breath analysis using fast response precision analysers. This device has additional support for continuous ECG, blood pressure and heart rate monitoring.

The Cortex is used predominantely for quick measurements of resting metabolic rate, but is also capable of extensive cardiopulminary exercise testing. Exercise equipment is available for use if required.
