Warwick Applied Health (WAH)
Warwick Applied Health is a large interdisciplinary department in Warwick Medical School, dedicated to improving health across the life course through innovative health research and world-leading education.
As one of three Directorates within Warwick Medical School, WAH plays a central role in an integrated ecosystem that spans Biomedical Sciences, the Clinical Trials Unit and the Institute of Translational Medicine. This configuration enables a coherent pathway from early scientific discovery through to rigorous evaluation and real-world application, supported by strong capabilities in data science, trial delivery and health systems research.
Positioned at the interface between academia, the NHS, industry and communities, the Directorate is characterised by its commitment to partnership and co-production. Research is developed and delivered in close collaboration with patients, the public and system stakeholders, ensuring relevance, inclusivity and impact. Patient, public and community involvement and engagement are embedded across all activities, strengthening the quality, accountability and societal value of the work.
Vision
WAH sets out an ambitious vision to lead internationally in applied health research and education, defined by intellectual rigour, translational excellence and measurable impact. Education
Our education programmes are defined by excellence in teaching, high levels of student engagement and a strong commitment to educational innovation, aligned with Teaching Excellence Framework principles. WAH educators play a central role in delivering key programmes across Warwick Medical School, including the MBChB, the BSc in Health and Medical Sciences, and postgraduate degrees in Public Health, Health Research and Medical Education. WAH staff also deliver a flexible and responsive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses, supporting healthcare professionals to upskill and progress across careers in line with evolving health system needs.
Teaching is research informed and practice focused, ensuring that students engage directly with contemporary health challenges and develop the skills required for professional and academic progression. The BSc in Health and Medical Sciences exemplifies this through its integrative curriculum and case-based learning pedagogy, delivered in small group settings that promote active learning, critical thinking and collaboration. Educational quality and student outcomes are continuously evaluated through national measures including the National Student Survey and contribute to strong institutional performance in the TEF.
At postgraduate level, programmes are interdisciplinary, flexible and increasingly modular, supporting a diverse student body including working professionals. Innovative assessment methods, including applied research projects, portfolios and practice-based outputs, enhance learning gain and real-world relevance. Across all provision, educators draw on research and clinical expertise to deliver an inclusive, high quality educational experience that prepares graduates to lead and innovate in complex health systems.
