My main research interests are in the genetic epidemiology of cancer. Within that broad area my past work and training has focused on nutritional epidemiology and gene-environment interactions. My future programme of work centres on looking at the prevention of cancer by diet and lifestyle changes and the further characterisation of genetic factors and their use in the identification of high risk groups in which lifestyle changes are likely to have more effect.
My other program of work is in risk based screening in the community. Current projects therefore include the development of risk scoring based approaches to prostate cancer. The proposed project is part of a 5 year 'Riskman' program of work to place a prostate risk calculator on the desk of every General Practitioner in England and Wales. We are currently in the second phase of this program and the current PCC funding application for phase 3 expands the number of GP practices from the 2 in the current on-going pilot phase to 10 in the development phase.
My past experience includes the work on the James Lind Alliance prostate cancer priority setting. This initiative aimed to identify unanswered questions in prostate cancer. The project outcomes were used to underline future prostate cancer research. This project involved both qualitative and quantitative methods. An extensive literature search and review were required to verify suggested prostate cancer diagnostic and treatment 'uncertainties' as to whether these had already been addressed/answered. The CRD database and Cochrane review database were utilized and a detailed report produced and published.
