Safeguarding Children
This module is designed to introduce you to clinical and legal issues in relation to safeguarding children. The course takes an ecological and evidence-based approach to safeguarding and is grounded in an understanding of the UN Convention on the rights of the child.
It is taught by specialists from the Division of Mental Health and Wellbeing at Warwick Medical School (WMS) as well as expert visiting speakers from specific fields relevant to the module content. It brings together students from a range of disciplines, enhancing the learning experience of all concerned.

Module content
- Theoretical background to safeguarding children, including aspects of vulnerability and resilience, ecological models of maltreatment, equality and diversity, children’s rights and parent-child interaction
- Nature and causes of child maltreatment
- Complementary roles of different professions involved in safeguarding and child protection practice
- Dynamic of communication with children, families and colleagues within the safeguarding arena
- Evaluation of evidence for strategies to safeguard and protect children
- Legal background to child protection practice
- Basis of UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: analysis of its implications for practitioners in child health
- 1989 and 2004 Children Acts, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and the Framework of Assessment of Children in Need
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the theoretical background to safeguarding children, including aspects of vulnerability and resilience, ecological models of maltreatment, children’s rights, equality and diversity, and parent-child interaction
- Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of the nature and causes of child maltreatment
- Understand and respect the complementary roles of different professionals involved in safeguarding and child protection practice
- Comprehend the dynamic of communication with children, families and colleagues within the safeguarding arena
- Critically evaluate the evidence for strategies to safeguard and protect children
- Understand and reflect on the legal background to child protection practice
- Understand the basis of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and analyse its implications for practitioners in child health
- Understand and explain the basis of the 1989 and 2004 Children Acts, Working Together to Safeguard Children, and the Framework of Assessment of Children in need
