Social Determinants of Health

Overview

Social Determinants of Health explores the complex relationships between social, economic, and environmental conditions and their impact on health and wellbeing. You’ll critically examine how factors such as income, education, occupation, ethnicity, gender, disability, and neighbourhood influence health outcomes, and how these determinants contribute to health inequalities within and across populations, particularly in industrialised countries like the UK.

By the end of this module, you will have developed:

  • A comprehensive understanding of key social determinants of health and how they shape patterns of health and illness.

  • The ability to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and interventions designed to reduce health inequalities.

  • Critical appraisal skills for analysing different types of evidence and theoretical frameworks used in public health research and policy.

This module combines asynchronous activities, lectures, small group discussions, and independent study.
