Why did you decide to apply to Health and Medical Sciences at Warwick Medical School?

I decided to apply to Health and Medical Sciences at Warwick Medical School because of its innovative and integrated approach to addressing current local and global health challenges. The course's unique blend of health science and medical science perspectives particularly appealed to me, as it offers a comprehensive understanding of health issues from molecular biology and genetics up to societal and population-level factors.

I was drawn to the curriculum's focus on relevant topics like infectious diseases, illnesses and wellbeing. The program's use of case-based learning in small groups also stood out as progressive approaches that would ensure I develop practical skills valued by employers. Additionally, the opportunity to conduct research for a dissertation project in the third year was highly attractive to me as I want a laboratory research experience. Warwick's reputation as a top-ranked university further solidified my decision to apply to this particular institution.

How did you find the transition to life and study in the UK?

The first year was very challenging. Academically, the transition required some adaptation. The teaching style in the UK emphasises independent learning and critical thinking, which was different from what I was used to back home. I had to quickly learn to manage my time effectively, especially when it came to preparing for exam. Luckily, both in high school and university, the support from my professors and the university's international student services was invaluable throughout.

How have you found the course so far and your overall Warwick experience as an international student?

The HMS course is a compact course which requires a great deal of effort on the part of the students. However, while it is busy, it makes you well prepared for many careers or further research opportunities after completing your undergraduate degree. My overall Warwick experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Having the opportunity to research my dissertation topic of interest with my professor, Erin Greaves, who has extensive experience in endometriosis, has been one of the highlights for me, and I am grateful for the opportunity she is providing me.

What tips do you have for other international applicants?

First, make it a priority to attend as many lectures as you can; this not only helps you grasp the course material better but also allows you to engage with professors and your peers. Don’t hesitate to reach out to module leaders via email if you have questions or need clarification on topics - most are very approachable and willing to help. Additionally, be brave and proactive in connecting with your classmates; forming study groups can be incredibly beneficial. Collaborating with others allows you to monitor each other's progress, share insights, and deepen your understanding of the material.
