Jakub's placement: The Rockefeller University

Jakub is currently in his final year on our MSci Integrated Natural Sciences degree. During the summer after his third year he spent 10 weeks in New York as part of The Rockefeller University's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program, and the experience has encouraged him to consider options abroad for his next steps after graduation. Here, he tells us more.

Tell us about your placement and what attracted you to it
I wanted to explore and do a research project in the United States, however, not many places can fund international students. This programme was different, as they accepted applications from everywhere in the world. On top of that, I very much wanted to experience a cohort-based scheme.
What was the first thing you did as part of the placement?
The first week was quite boring, research-wise. I had to complete all the health and safety trainings and set up, and retrieve data from the computing cluster. But, thanks to that I had a bit more time to explore the Central Park which was only a few minutes away from my accommodation.
What have you learned as part of the placement?
My project was focused on obtaining a 3D structure of a protein assembly by cryo-electron microscopy. I learned how to analyse a big dataset of images taken under an electron microscope and how to build an atomic model of the said proteins.
Have you enjoyed any experiences outside of the labs?
Yes, most definitely. New York is such a lively place! It feels that despite being there for 10 weeks and site-seeing whenever possible, I only managed to see half of the things I planned. Probably the most mesmorising were the Natural History Museum and the museum of modern art MoMa.
What have you enjoyed most?
There were so many things I enjoyed, but probably the cohort aspect was the pinnacle. I loved exploring different places in New York as a group and having dinners together! The programme also incorporated some group activities which allowed me to meet students from around the world and discuss our scientific interests.
Has this changed the way you think about future options?
Yes; before the scheme, I was mostly considering doing a PhD in the UK. However, having experienced New York, I would love to come back and continue my education there.
Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about summer placements?
Try applying to several places as the admissions can be “hit or miss” and definitely don’t be scared to explore different areas that you might not have as much experience in!
What are your plans after you graduate?
I would like to pursue a PhD in biophysics. Currently I am planning on applying to different programmes across the UK and U.S.
