Lance's internship: Deloitte

internship at Deloitte

Integrated Natural Sciences student Lance completed a four-week internship with Deloitte’s Banking & Capital Markets team in their Audit & Assurance Division. He gained first-hand experience on a live year-end project, worked closely with senior client representatives, and explored how technology such as cloud analytics and AI is transforming the profession. Here, he tells us how the placement highlighted how transferable his scientific training is to the corporate world.

Tell us about your placement and what attracted you to it

During my four-week internship, I was assigned to Deloitte’s Banking & Capital Markets Team within their Audit & Assurance Division. Here, I supported a real year-end A&A project and gained valuable exposure to senior client representatives within financial services and FinTech.

I was particularly drawn to Deloitte because of their commitment to their values, their people, and the expansive range of industries they’re involved in - some you’d never even imagine an A&A team could touch! The combination of meaningful client work, professional development, and the opportunity to be surrounded by motivated peers is what really attracted me to the programme.

What was the first thing you did as part of the placement?

The internship kicked off with a two-day induction in London, where all the interns from across the UK came together. It was amazing to see everyone in one place and feel part of something so big!

Over those first couple of days, we learned about Deloitte’s impact across industries and some of their recent ventures in areas from robotics and sustainable solutions. What really stood out was meeting partners and directors who had once been in our shoes as interns - it was inspiring to see how their careers had grown from the same starting point.

What have you learned as part of the placement?

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is how transferable my Integrated Natural Sciences degree really is. The analytical mindset I’ve developed at Warwick - breaking down large datasets, spotting patterns, and drawing insights - translated directly into the corporate setting. I realised the same skills I’d use in the lab are just as valuable when working with confidential client data.

I also learned the importance of effective collaboration and clear communication, whether that was working within my team or navigating client calls. On top of that, I got exposure to new tools and approaches, such as cloud-based data analytics and AI applications inA&A, which showed me how technology is reshaping the profession in real time.

What did you most enjoy about the placement?
What I enjoyed most was meeting so many like-minded and ambitious people and forming genuine friendships - including with a few fellow Warwick students I hadn’t met before. The social side of the internship was just as valuable as the professional experience, and it made every day more enjoyable. Even though the programme ended months ago, my friends and I have kept in touch and continue to meet up regularly!

Another highlight was getting the chance to represent the firm while volunteering at a local high school. I delivered a careers talk where I explained my role and what Deloitte does for clients and helped run team activities designed to get students excited about the business world. It was truly rewarding to encourage them to think about future opportunities and see their enthusiasm grow.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about summer placements?

My advice would be to treat application season like a marathon, not a sprint. While others may stress about making their application the one on the top of the pile as soon as roles open, take the time to find programmes that genuinely interest you. From there, set aside small parts of your day to fully read up on them and apply. Good luck!

What are your plans after you graduate?
The internship showed me that I truly enjoy the dynamic, collaborative, and fast-paced environment within corporate functions. After I graduate, I hope to stay within this space - using data-driven insights to make meaningful contributions and helping clients make the most well-informed business decisions.
