10.00-11.30: Practical application of a refined Threshold Concept Framework for Medical Education
Dr Helen Jones and Professor Lucy Hammond
MTC 004/006
Threshold concepts (TCs) have been the subject of enthusiastic debate amongst medical educators in recent years. TCs resonate with educators and learners alike, indicated by the wealth of papers published on the topic. However, a major criticism is the question of how they can be applied in practice.
This workshop will introduce participants to our refined model of threshold concepts in medical education and provide practical steps as to how this can be applied and used in the development of medical education curricula and practice. Workshop participants will use interactive and participatory approaches to identify ‘stuck places’ in their own students’ learning and curriculum and explore ways to support learners to navigate these issues through application of the model. This workshop is suitable for educators across the medical education continuum from undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education.
Objectives and Outcomes of the workshop:
- Identify ‘stuck places’ for learners in the medical education curriculum.
- Apply the refined model of TCs in medical education as a lens for reviewing curricula across the medical education continuum.
- Propose ways to support student development and transition through the stuck places to achieve transformative learning.
- Engage in critical discourse on the model to further develop it.
