Dean of the Medical School

What does your role involve?

I am accountable and provide leadership for all aspects of our work across our research and education portfolio. My job is to ensure the continued success of WMS by realising our strategic plans. I chair the School’s senior management team and work closely with stakeholders and partners regionally, nationally and internationally to capitalise on opportunities for improvement and growth. In additional to working as Dean I undertake clinical work as a Critical Care Consultant in Birmingham.

What should students contact you about?

I am new in my role and am looking forward to meeting many of you over the coming months. I am particularly keen to hear from students about their successes and the exciting initiatives they are involved in which I am proud to share with the wider School community and beyond. Should students experience particular issues, it is advisable to start with your course teams as we have a significant student support system in place that should be able to resolve any problems you encounter. However, if issues remain unresolved after these avenues have been exhausted, they can be escalated to me.

Working with the international resuscitation community and Resuscitation Council UK to improve outcomes from cardiac arrest.

Professor Lucy Hammond

Pro Dean (Education)

What does your role involve?

I have responsibility for the full education portfolio at WMS which includes our postgraduate research programmes, our postgraduate taught courses, short courses and UG programmes as well as the MBChB. Despite being passionate about teaching this role sees me predominantly dealing with issues of strategy, staffing, delivery and regulation – but always welcoming to student supervision or other contact.

What should students contact you about?

Issues which cannot be resolved by immediate course teams, great ideas which require School level input or any positive feedback about staff or peers – it makes me happy and means I have the opportunity to give thanks where due!

Professor Colin Macdougall

Associate Dean Medical Education

Find me: Room 019, MTC or working from home from Kenilworth. Even when 'on site' I'm often not in my office – but Maggie Crisp has secret ways of knowing where I am and can find a good time for us to meet virtually or socially distanced face to face! On Thursdays I am being a Paediatrician at UHCW – if y ou're doing child health at UHCW, join me and learn about allergy!

What does your role involve?

I am responsible for the whole course and lead on the strategy for everything from admissions to exams. I also represent the school and course to the wider world and keep abreast of national and international issues that will affect the school, our students and staff, now and in the future.

What should students contact you about?

Issues about the whole school and whole course, medical education in general and the political landscape. If in doubt, drop me an email and I can always re-direct it if there is someone better placed to deal with it.

Professor Kate Owen

What does your role involve?

I deputise for Prof Macdougall and have a key role in the day to day running of the course as chair of the Learning, Teaching & Quality Committee. My main area of responsibility is the curriculum and teaching quality. I am a huge believer in the value of student engagement and am often after volunteers for interview panels, away days, working groups...so do get in touch if you would like to contribute! I'm also very interested in patient engagement in medical education.

• Anything that you think could be improved about the curriculum, or course in general- but be warned I will ask you how you think we could do it better (and probably ask you to be involved in changing it). I love ideas!
• Anything that is working well, or staff who deserve recognition.
• Any serious concerns.

Professor Lanre Sorinola

Academic Lead for Phase II

What does your role involve?

I am responsible for learning, teaching, assessment and support for students in Phase II MBChB. I have oversight of the learning experience and curriculum in Phase II. I work closely with NHS Trust partners and GPs to ensure all our students have a great learning experience during their clinical placements. I am also Chair of the WMS Attainment Gap Group ensuring all our students achieve their potential. In my clinical role, I work as a Consultant Gynaecologist at SWFT.

What should students contact you about?

• Any Phase II related academic issues and queries. I am always interested to hear and get feedback from students about all aspects of Phase II, whether related to WMS or Trust / GP clinical placements.
• BAME Attainment Gap issues and concerns.
• Medical education research / projects.

Dr Paul De Cates

Academic Lead for Phase III

What does your role involve?

I am responsible for learning, teaching, assessment and support for students in Phase III MBChB. I am especially involved in providing oversight of the Phase III curriculum, in working with the trust and GP teams providing clinical placements, and in working with the assessment and student support teams here at WMS.

What should students contact you about?

Any issues of an academic nature relating Phase III, especially where these issues have not been addressed at a local trust or block level, or where students do not feel it appropriate to raise in this way. I am always interested to hear any feedback (positive or negative!) from students about any aspect of Phase III, especially if this feedback is not being captured or addressed by our existing evaluation processes.

Lorraine Brown

Head of Operational Delivery

What does your role involve?

I lead the School’s MB ChB’s operational delivery team, the team that supports the delivery and administration of the curriculum across all Phases. I work closely with our NHS partners, the Phase Leads, Student Support and Head of Professional Standards.

What should students contact you about?

Anything to do with administration; Finance and NHS Bursary, student recruitment and admissions, student registration and enrolment, pretty much anything to do with your student experience during your time with us.

Rebecca Mole

Head of Professional Standards

What does your role involve?

• Reviewing, managing and implementing curriculum and assessment changes.
• Developing and managing our regulation, and representing our regulatory and practical needs/interests within WMS and the wider University
• Secretary to the Board of Examiners and liaison with External Examiners to ensure quality governance of our assessment processes.
• Developing our Raising Concerns and Promoting Professionalism processes, and a member of the Health, Welfare and Professionalism Group.
• I work very closely with the head of operational delivery, student support team, phase teams, and the exams team.

Questions about or issues during exams, board of examiners processes and policies (including pass lists), UKFPO EPM calculations, prizes and awards of Merit/Distinction, UKMLA delivery, anything else relating to your assessment experience and time with us.

I have a 2 year old daughter who keeps me super busy alongside a love for good food, wine, and travel. I also enjoy renovating... there is something oddly therapeutic about taking a sledge hammer to a wall and driving a digger!

Helen Nolan

Academic Lead for Quality Assurance & Enhancement, Head of Education Quality Team

What does your role involve?

As head of the Education Quality Team, I work to prioritise and maintain high standards of teaching, learning and assessment WMS, regularly through student feedback and working with students, staff and education partners. I lead on quality assurance reporting to the GMC, which ensures that the MB ChB remains compliant with quality standards.

I review and coordinate responses to external examiner reports for MB ChB assessments (amongst other things!)

What should students contact you about?

Happy to discuss all/ any of the following:

• Education evaluation
• Student dialogue and feedback: contact me with student feedback, including ideas of how we can best collect your feedback and, of course, close the loop with you on actions taken in response to your feedback. I am always eager to highlight, share and celebrate good practice at WMS so positive feedback is particularly welcome!
• Student quality reviewers: I lead on education monitoring visits (EMVs) to trust education partners and I welcome student members on visit panels. These visits are a key part of our quality assurance and enhancement processes at WMS. Inclusion of the student voice - your first-hand experience - is a key source of evidence in evaluating and enhancing education quality. Through participation, students can gain experience of education quality assurance processes and student quality reviewer roles. Please get in touch directly if you would like to discuss this further.
• Quality improvement projects or student research: I would love to hear student ideas for quality improvement projects or initiatives at WMS or with education partners at trusts and in the community!
