International MB ChB student profile: May
May is a final year MB ChB student from Thailand. Before coming to Warwick, she gained a degree in engineering at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and a Master’s in Science Communication at Imperial College London. She worked as a digital designer and in marketing and communications for an engineering company, and had limited experience in healthcare before coming to the course. Here, she tells us how she's found her degree and her top tip for applicants.

Why did you decide to study medicine at Warwick Medical School?
WMS is one of the few places in the UK that offers a true graduate programme designed for post-graduates who may not have done A-levels (which I did not have as I did my secondary school in Thailand) or had a background in biomedical sciences. I wanted to be in an adult learning environment with people of more similar educational or professional backgrounds rather than with those who have just left school. I was also drawn to the relative ease of traveling to London and Birmingham - two of England’s biggest cities - from Coventry.
How did you find the transition to life and study in the UK?
Having done a Master’s back in 2019 I found it relatively smooth to transition into living and studying in the UK. The effortlessness of traveling to (and even commuting from) London means I get to still meet old friends and attend concerts and events not otherwise available in Warwickshire/West Midlands. (It’s really important to maintain your support system and do things you enjoy to not burn out!)
How have you found the MB ChB so far and how have you found your overall Warwick experience as an international student?
I really enjoy my placements at the three hospitals: UHCW, George Eliot Hospital, and Warwick Hospital. The doctors, education team, and other staff members have been very helpful, supportive, and friendly. One particular moment that stood out for me was during my surgical placement at Warwick Hospital where I met a family who have just relocated from Thailand to Leamington Spa. The patient and their family needed extra reassurance before consenting for a procedure, and I offered to explain the benefits and risks to them in Thai. It really made me feel like I made a difference!
Have you been involved in any extracurricular activities?
I did some teaching sessions for Phase I and II students. My previous experience in graphic design has been useful as it allows me to create unique and visually memorable teaching materials that have been well received by students.
What tips do you have for other international applicants?
Even if English is not your first language or you’ve not had any clinical experience previously, you belong here as much as anyone else! Don't sell yourself short!
