Research Innovation and Impact at Warwick Medical School
We seek to identify and answer fundamental questions on the origins, detection, prevention, and treatment of human disease. Our 100+ investigators lead research programmes that span Discovery Science and Translational Research to late stage Clinical Trials and Applied Health Research. Our Translational Research is accelerating the delivery of practical human health benefits through new therapeutics, devices & diagnostics, process innovation, and other interventions.
We will shape health policy and extend our strategic working with our NHS, Health and Social Care partners to accelerate patient-facing research and maximise our impact on human health and wellbeing.
Research Flagships
Our Research Flagships have well-established internationally visible research strength that generate world class outputs and impacts. They reflect the deep interdisciplinary nature of our research.
Clinical Trials Unit
WCTU is interdisciplinary with collaboration between clinical trialists, statisticians, economists, clinical experts and project managers. Our programmes of work draw together quantitative and qualitative methodologies in an evaluation framework. High quality, randomised evidence is generated to inform modern clinical and health care practice. Discover more about the services we provide here
Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology
Mechanochemical cell biology asks about the machineries of movement in living systems.
Warwick’s Centre for Mechanochemical Cell Biology aims to drive scientific understanding in this area – from the mechanisms of individual molecule stepping machines, to the motions of entire organisms, and everything in between. Find out more
Warwick Screening & Population Health
Warwick Screening is a multidisciplinary team of researchers who specialise in evaluating health screening for a variety of conditions. Our work spans primary research, evidence review for national and international policy-makers, and specialist teaching. Find out more here

Our Research Directorates
Our Research Directorates drive innovation across Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Trials, and Applied Health.
Our Biomedical Sciences division pioneers world-class discovery science, laying the foundations for ground-breaking treatments. In Clinical Trials, our expertise is in conducting rigorous, world-leading studies to bring safe and effective treatments to transform the lives of patients. Our Applied Health directorate translates these advances into real-world healthcare improvements, from policy changes to enhanced patient care, focusing on the design and effectiveness of interventions. Collectively, our directorates foster a cohesive and multi-disciplinary approach to medical research that transforms scientific discoveries into tangible health outcomes, impacting lives worldwide and shaping the future of medicine.
Biomedical Sciences
The Directorate of Biomedical Sciences provides a platform to deliver world-class discovery science, acts as a hub for interdisciplinary biomedical research across the University and supports our ambition to further develop translational medicine programmes in partnership with the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW).
Clinical Trials
Warwick Clinical Trials Unit is a strong, vibrant and enthusiastic team who deliver world-class clinical trials which transform the lives of patients. Our multi-professional teams value integrity, excellence, collaboration, respect, innovation, efficiency and courage. We champion diversity and prioritise our teams’ wellbeing, creating a rich environment for the development of the next generation of research leaders.
Warwick Applied Health
The Directorate of Applied Health works across disciplines integrating psycho-social, organisational and bio-medical perspectives in our research and teaching. Our research focus is on the design and evaluation of interventions (behavioural, medical, technological and organisational), plus how the application of knowledge in these areas changes clinical practice and ultimately health outcomes.
Health Missions
Our Health Missions are designed to bring together all the necessary expertise and experience to tackle major health challenges facing our society. This demands we build mission-specific local ecosystems that connect warwick researchers with other universities, NHS partners, local government, third sector organisations and patients themselves - all with shared purpose and clear goals:
Women's Health
We are working to transform the health of women across the life course with our multi-disciplinary research community. Our mission is to drive change through new diagnostics and interventions, whilst generating evidence and shaping policy, informed at every step by the voices of the women and girls at the heart of the endeavour.
Mental Health & Wellbeing
Mental Health conditions affect almost 1 billion people globally, the impact is devastating and contributes significantly to the global burden of disease. Research into mental health is urgently required to address these challenges. To make breakthroughs we seek to accelerate challenge-focused programmes.
Infectious Disease
Our mission is to advance the understanding and control of infectious diseases through rigorous scientific research and strategic partnerships. We are committed to developing innovative diagnostic tools, effective treatments, and robust prevention and preparedness strategies. By generating data and evidence, we drive policy changes for regional, national and global health protection.
Building an outstanding cultural, intellectual, and physical research environment
High-quality research is dependent upon a thriving and positive research culture. Our community have pioneered a values-driven understanding of the importance of research culture at Warwick Medical School, in which our people, our community and our research is valued.
