PhD Thesis Prize winners
Three PhD students of the class of 2019 have been awarded prestigious prizes for the outstanding quality of their doctoral theses. George King was awarded the Winton Prize for Astrophysics, while Ben Chapman and Connor Mosley were joint recipients of the Faculty of Science Thesis Prize. Connor also won the Springer Thesis Prize, and his thesis will be published by Springer. Read more
Travel bursaries from the IOP
Information from the IOP:
The Institute of Physics is accepting travel bursary applications for the Research Student Conference Fund and C.R. Barber Trust, which provide financial support (up to £300) to research students who wish to attend international conferences and major international meetings.
If you are interested in applying, see below some of the requirements:
• You must be a PhD student, a member of the Institute, and a member of one (or more) of our groups.
• The event you wish to attend must relate to the group you are a member of.
You can apply for up to £300 during the progress of your PhD; please note that this funding is intended to supplement funding from other sources. See the full list of criteria and application form for the RSCF here, and for the C.R. Barber, here.
Your RSCF application must reach the IOP by the deadline that is at least three months before the conference you plan to attend. For example, for an event taking place in October, your application should reach us by 1 June.
PGCTSS accreditation and Chartered Physicist status
The Postgraduate Certificate in Transferable Skills in Science for Doctoral Researchers has been accredited by the Institute of Physics, plus the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Biology. The program maps onto Chartered Physicist status, which one can apply for with 4 years of experience post-undergraduate degree. See here for more information.
