Professor Valery Nakariakov awarded £2.1 million from the European Research Council (ERC)
Congratulations to Professor Valery Nakariakov, from our Centre for Fusion, Space & Astrophysics who has been awarded £2.1 million from the European Research Council (ERC). The ERC AdG project aims to transformatively advance our understanding of the long-standing mystery of why the Sun's outer atmosphere - the corona - is heated to millions of degrees.
This 5-year project is based upon the hypothesis that coronal heating is driven by the combined effects of numerous small-scale flares and magnetohydrodynamic waves.
The research will make use of high-precision data from cutting-edge observational instruments, including ESA’s Solar Orbiter mission, and will integrate these observations with advanced theoretical modelling.
This marks the second time Professor Nakariakov has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant.
