International Technology Management for Defence and Security

Course Aims

The objective of this WMG-UPNM MSc in International Technology Management for Defence & Security partnership programme is to provide knowledge, skills and critical understanding on concepts and tools relevant to strategic analysis, leadership and international management of technology in defence and security in a local, regional and international context. The course will provide well informed and intelligent customers, users and suppliers of technology within the defence and security sector.

No other institution locally or globally teaches an integrated International Technology Management course for the Defence & Security sector.

Although 4 of the 10 modules on the ITMDS course have Defence & Security in the title, every module contains a significant element of Defence & Security context, through examples, relevant case studies and industry speakers

Course Learning Outcomes
  • critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and demonstrate advanced scholarship in international technology management in the defence & security sector
  • appraise the defence and security environment, stakeholder requirements, challenges and opportunities that drive effective technology solutions
  • identify and evaluate current and emerging technologies applicable to the defence and security sector
  • select appropriate technology development strategies to suit local and international opportunities and need
  • assist in the development, delivery and integration of new technologies for complex systems, programmes and projects
  • make informed decisions by considering the ‘cradle to grave’ technology lifecycle, from both a strategic and operational point of view
  • contribute to the leadership and management of technology enabled change
  • demonstrate how to create an eco-system that supports and fosters innovation
Module Requirements for International Technology Management for Defence and Security

Candidates for the MSc will be required to take no less than 180 credits overall to include 20 credits from the core list, 40 credits from the required list, and 30 credits from the optional list, as well as a dissertation project.

Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma will be required to pass 60 module credits, with at least 20 credits from the core list and 40 credits from the required and optional lists combined, as well as a dissertation project considered by an Exam Board to be a pass at Postgraduate Diploma level.

Candidates for the Postgraduate Certificate will be required to pass 60 credits, with at least 20 credits from the core list and 40 credits from the required and optional lists combined.

Candidates for the Postgraduate Award will be required to pass 30 credits, with at least 20 credits from the core list and 10 credits from the required and optional lists combined.

Definition of terms:

  • Core: students must pass the module (50% or above)
  • Optional core: students must take the stated proportion of modules from this list and must achieve a pass (50% or above).
  • Required: students must achieve mark of 40% or above on the module
  • Defined Elective: students must take the stated proportion of modules from this limited list
  • Optional (elective) modules: students may take any remaining credits from this list after satisfying the list requirements outlined above
  • Students are still required to achieve the stated amount of passed credits and credits failed in the 40s for award as per General PGT Regulations page
