WMG Undergraduate Mitigating Circumstances Panels

WMG Personal/Mitigating Circumstances Information

Declaring mitigating circumstances the process to follow when you have experienced a sudden, unforeseen and serious issues such as an accident, physical or mental health difficulties, or a detrimental change in personal circumstances and were unable to make arrangements (such as requesting an extension or arranging reasonable adjustments) in advance of the affected assessment. The 3 most common outcomes of a successful mitigating circumstances claim are:

  • The waiving of late penalties
  • An uncapped resit ('Further First Attempt')
  • A third attempt at an assessment- please note that this is exceptional.

If it is before the assessment deadline and you are seeking an extension, please follow the extension request process instead.

How to submit a mitigating circumstances claim

All claims must be submitted through Tabula. There is video guidance available here: How to declare mitigating circumstances

You must submit any mitigating circumstances within 20 university working days of the assessment deadline or scheduled event.

Before putting in a claim for mitigation, please read the university policy for mitigating circumstancesLink opens in a new window. Mitigating circumstances do not result in changes to marks; they may result in you being able to take a failed assessment again as a first attempt, or to have an extension for a deadline, or to have a late penalty removed. Mitigation may also be considered when deciding final year degree classifications in borderlines cases, but it does not automatically result in a higher degree classification.

We recommend that you make an appointment with your Personal/Apprenticeship Tutor to discuss any claims before submission. University guidance on what constitutes suitable evidence can be found here. For any further queries about evidence please contact or visit the Student Office. The Panel Chair (or Deputy) may be involved in resolving the query.

All claims will be assessed in confidence by the Mitigating Circumstances Panel of the Department. The deadline for submission of mitigating circumstances evidence will be 4pm on the Monday before each Panel meeting.
