The Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) Group, led by Dr Greg Gibbons focus on research and development related to the advancement of ALM technologies, their materials and applications. Dr Gibbons has been leading research and knowledge transfer in ALM at WMG for over 20 years and heads-up the ALM facility in the Centre for Imaging, Metrology and Additive Technologies (CiMAT).
ALM technologies manufacture products in a layer-wise manner through the addition of material, rather than through the traditional subtractive (e.g. machining) and formative (e.g. injection moulding) methods, and the flexibility that this affords offers new and exciting challenges and opportunities. The Group's key research themes are the development and validation of Additive Technologies in new and advanced applications, new materials and process development, and ALM-enabled new business models.
The group collaborates closely with industry, including Unilever, BAE Systems, Bombardier Aerospace, Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Steel and Magna Parva Ltd.The overall goal of the ALM group is to provide real world ALM solutions to industry, enabling them to deliver more capable, higher performance products under ever increasing financial pressures, through innovation in their manufacturing strategies and methods.
