WMG and JLR Launch Global Training Programme to Upskill Engineers in Smart, Connected, and Autonomous Vehicle Technologies

A global WMG Skills Centre training programme is underway after a successful pilot to upskill engineers in the latest advancements in Smart, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (SCAV).

As a leading global automotive company, JLR is at the forefront of an ever-evolving industry landscape and recognises the increasing consumer demand for safer and more efficient intelligent vehicles. With the emergence of IoT, the growing popularity of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and the need for intelligent transportation systems, JLR requires skilled engineers in this space quickly to meet market demand.

After conducting a survey in 2023, JLR identified an interest from its ADAS employees to undertake training in Smart, Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (SCAV) to enhance their knowledge and skills in the latest technical advancements, but needed a unique solution that could be delivered to learners in multiple global locations.

Based on a long-standing relationship and a mutual understanding of the industry, the WMG Skills Centre and JLR collaborated to develop and deliver a pilot training programme consisting of five key SCAV modules that were delivered online. The modules included an Introduction to SCAV, Robust Automotive Embedded Systems, Machine Intelligence and Data Science, Automotive Sensors and Sensor Fusion and Automated Systems and Control and featured real-life JLR operational case studies that could be applied to the learners' role.

"The programme was created in close collaboration with WMG, addressing JLR's need to deliver training solutions in Automated and Assisted Driving (AAD) across its global engineering locations. Strong partnerships with the academic team on technical content and the operational team on programme design and delivery defined the pre-launch phase, resulting in high Net Promoter Scores from learners when the programme went live."

Dr Eric Coolen, Technical Learning Manager, JLR

After the success of the pilot, JLR commissioned WMG to expand the delivery of the programme to a further 350+ learners in multiple global locations until March 2025. To meet the challenges of a global roll-out and to optimise the learners experience, WMG formed a dedicated project delivery team to work closely with JLR’s technical learning manager to meet the scale of delivery.

The bespoke offering is being delivered by leading WMG teaching staff in partnership with WMG’s Intelligent Vehicles research group and via WMG’s online SmartLearn training portal. SmartLearn provides a flexible and innovative learning environment with 24/7 access to course content, tools and resources.
