Welcome to WMG

The individual elements of your degree are known as modules (or courses). Each module has a different focus.

For most courses each module will last for 4 weeks and you will usually attend 2 x 4 hour seminars each week. On occasion there may also be large lectures to attend instead of seminars where you will be with your whole course or other deviations to the standard.

Module assessment usually comprises of a combination of various assignments such as in-module assessments which could be a group presentation. a test or a piece of work to be submitted on the final day of the module, and post-module assignments. Assessments are designed as an educational extension to a particular module that you attended. Assessments are to enable the student to build-up confidence in the techniques of application of this knowledge and to indicate to the tutors whether the module targets have been achieved.

A second function of assessment is module credit towards the MSc. Your course regulations state that an MSc student must satisfactorily complete and satisfy the examiners in modules equivalent to 120 academic units of credit (i.e. attend fully, submit and pass all assignments).Writing an MSc level assessment can be daunting so during the year we will be offering resources to help you in your writing.

The Library is available 24 hours for all students to use as needed. You can find a huge variety of resources, both online and in-person. All your required course reading will be available from the library.

You will receive an 'Introduction to Library Services' session during welcome week, delivered by WMG's Academic Support Librarian.

Email: both the University and the department will communicate with you on your new Warwick email address (available once you've completed your enrolment).Make sure you check this account regularly!

MYWARWICK: you will have your own personalised 'My Warwick' account. This is where you'll be able to access your university emails, timetable, campus information and much more.

Tabula: an online system you will use to see your timetable, coursework deadlines, electronically submit assignments and download marking feedback. Full details and support will be provided once you arrive.

Moodle: Moodle is a web platform known as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which is specifically designed to support the delivery of teaching and learning materials and activities.

Group allocation will be carried out once all students have arrived and enrolled, and so your teaching timetable (beyond week 0) may not show until after Welcome Week. Once published, your timetable will available to view on Tabula and will display on the MyWarwick app too.

The Student Handbook is available through the Student Portal. The 2025/6 handbook is not yet available but will be uploaded soon!

Who is my Personal Tutor?

Your Personal Tutor will be assigned to you within the first few weeks, is an academic member of WMG staff who can provide you with general academic advice and help. If you experience problems during your time at Warwick, you have a named person who you can contact for help or advice in the first instance.

What is their role?

• Your Personal Tutor is your first point of contact within the department to discuss any issues that arise, whether pastoral or academic.
• You can draw on their experience and expertise as and when you need – they are your ongoing individual face-to-face relationship within the department and are here to support you throughout your time at Warwick.
• They are also the most obvious person to provide references for you after you graduate, so it is worthwhile investing time into developing a strong working relationship.

The WMG Senior Tutors have oversight of the personal tutor system within the Department and liaise with the Dean of Students about student welfare and pastoral policy. You can contact the Senior Tutors with concerns that you may not wish to raise with your Personal Tutor.

During your course induction, you will get an opportunity to meet your Course Leader who is responsible for your specific Masters course. Other key staff you will come into contact with during your year are your module tutors, project supervisor and administrative staff.

The Student Office is based on the first floor of the IDL Building. They deal with the administration of your degree programme. If you have any questions not covered during Welcome Week, please drop by the office in IDL.

SSLC stands for Student-Staff Liaison Committee. There are SSLCs in each department in the University that feed into both the Students' Union and the University administration.

SSLCs are committees made up of elected student representatives and members of staff. They are student-led and provide an area for students and staff to discuss ideas and solve problems connected with teaching, learning and student support.
