Spam and phishing emails

These are emails on online messages that are fake and meant to steal something from you. You have to be aware of them.

Another risk of having a presence online is that you are at a higher risk of being targeted by spam, phishing or fraudulent messages and emails.

According to Microsoft:

“Phishing (pronounced: fishing) is an attack that attempts to steal your money, or your identity, by getting you to reveal personal information -- such as credit card numbers, bank information, or passwords -- on websites that pretend to be legitimate. Cybercriminals typically pretend to be reputable companies, friends, or acquaintances in a fake message, which contains a link to a phishing website.”

You can recognise these emails from general signs will be discussed in section 6.3.1 and then from more detailed and specific signs will be discussed in section 6.3.2.

This section will discuss some of these signs and what measures you should take to avoid being targeted.
