Why I’m very much in favour of mitochondrial donation – Dr Fiona McCallum

Dr Fiona McCallum, a psychologist from the University of Warwick, said: "I am very much in favour of mitochondrial donation, and would endorse its implementation. This is not something that has been rushed into; the HFEA has conducted three scientific reviews, and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics has looked carefully at the ethical implications..."

Commenting on the news that this week's edition of Charlie Hebdo will feature a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed on its front page, Dr Charles Walton said: “Touching, tasteful, unifyingly defiant. It manages to ‘blaspheme' with its depiction of the Prophet but without alienating Muslims by making their religion appear to be the inevitable source of terrorism."


Hold the Christmas cheer; it’s a patchwork jobs recovery - Prof Chris Warhurst

Professor Chris Warhurst is the Director of the Institute for Employment Research. He said: "The good news from today’s figures is that unemployment continues to fall and more people are in work. In fact Christmas present looks good. Almost half a million jobs have been created in the UK this year. The employment rate has risen to 73%, continuing an upward trend that started in 2011. Unemployment has fallen to 6%, this time the continuation of a downward trend. And the UK’s unemployment rate is far lower than the EU average (6% vs 10%). It seems like glad tidings for UK workers therefore.

New porn legislation is unclear and unwarranted – Dr Helen McCabe
