Extension (Postgraduate Taught Students Only)

If, for any reason, you believe that you will not be able to complete your course by the expected completion date, you should discuss the difficulties you are having with your personal tutor, course director or the Director of Graduate Studies in your department as soon as you can.

A request for extension should be submitted using Student Records Requests in Student Records Online. This request will be sent to your department and Student Administrative Services and if this is supported, Student Records will write to you confirming the details of the extension. If the start date of the extension is in the future and the request is approved then the progress bar of the request will be updated.

Please note that the Maximum Period of Study PolicyLink opens in a new window will apply from the 2022/23 academic year and will apply to all students starting their first year of study from 2022/23 onwards.

Extensions of registration period of up to six months are free of charge. Extensions greater than six months are subject to a £75 administrative fee. Please note that this fee is levied on each and every extension beyond the initial six months (i.e. an extension of two extra months will generate a fee of £75; if you apply for the seventh month and later submit a request for another, eighth, month, the £75 fee would be charged twice, totalling £150). Students and department are therefore encouraged to consider extension requests carefully and ensure that time sought is realistic in light of work required.

(Also, to prevent multiple short-term extensions, a minimum of three months is recommended for each extension request.)

International students (not applicable to postgraduate research students): Please note that if you require further immigration permission to remain in the UK, you are subject to a time limit of five years at degree-level. You should consider if this extension will put you beyond your five years.
