Governance Structures and Quality

The Education Quality Framework should be considered alongside the University’s governance structures, which play a key role in assuring quality.

The University’s Council is ultimately responsible for educational quality but delegates responsibility for oversight of this and the University’s academic affairs more broadly to the Senate. The Senate in turn delegates to and is informed by several committees with remits relating to educational quality, academic standards, student experience and student outcomes:

Committee

Relevant aspects of its remit

Education and Student Experience Committee

The Education and Student Experience Committee has responsibility for the development, oversight and implementation of strategy relating to education and the student experience, on behalf of the Senate. It approves the policy framework governing the delivery of a Warwick education and student experience, across all levels and modes of study, in support of the University Regulations approved by the Senate. It advises and makes decisions on policies and strategies in light of requirements and guidance from government, regulators, and sector bodies. The Committee provides assurance to the Senate and the Council that strategy and policy are implemented, and that the University’s compliance with its regulatory obligations is secured, as they relate to education and the student experience.

  Quality and Standards Subcommittee

The Quality and Standards Subcommittee has responsibility for developing robust and inclusive policy foundations to secure academic standards, secure regulatory compliance and to ensure continuous improvement in education quality – including in relation to student complaints, appeals, discipline and professional practice. The Subcommittee has a remit across and champions the breadth of the University's taught programmes and modes of delivery and works closely with the Postgraduate Research Subcommittee to ensure a coherence of approach across taught and research degrees.

  Educational Partnerships Oversight Panel

The Educational Partnerships Oversight Panel ensures the quality of all new, revised, and renewed educational partnerships. Taking account of academic standards and strategic initiatives (e.g. Education and Student Experience Strategy, Internationalisation Strategy) the Group provides scrutiny, monitoring and review of educational partnership provision.

  Student Success Subcommittee

The Student Success Subcommittee has responsibility for creating an inclusive education and experience where students are welcomed from early point of contact and enabled to succeed to their full potential. The Subcommittee takes a holistic view across the educational and wider aspects of student life, prioritising engagement, inclusion, connection, wellbeing, and opportunities for students to engage in and be recognised for their intellectual, social and cultural contribution at Warwick and beyond. The Subcommittee has a remit across and champions the breadth of the University programmes and modes of delivery.

  Learning and Teaching Subcommittee

The Learning and Teaching Subcommittee has responsibility for developing, implementing and monitoring inclusive strategies, policies and practices, informed by student voice and insight, that encourage excellence and innovation in learning, teaching and assessment. Education Quality Framework

The Framework brings together, organises and re-expresses The University of Warwick’s (“Warwick” hereafter) existing quality assurance mechanisms into one place. It acts as a formal framework setting out how we assess compliance with internal and external quality standards, primarily the Office for Student’s (OfS) ongoing conditions of registration.

Themes

The framework is arranged thematically, with the quality activities leading to assurance of standards arranged against each theme in three of the four ‘lines’. Linking the themes with the lines are brief expressions of our minimum expectations, informed by QAA’s indicators of quality(PDF) – each individual activity will also have its own aims and expectations expressed in the relevant guidance and process information.

Compliance with OfS B Conditions

This is an at-a-glance chart showing where our activities facilitate compliance with the B conditions. A more comprehensive mapping exercise is in development.

Warwick's Quality Processes, Policies and Advice

Over time Warwick has developed a range of processes, policies, advice and guidance that is used centrally and by departments to assure quality. The Framework uses these existing quality processes and policies as its component parts. Some external reference materials that help build quality HE provision are included here as well.
