Student blog: Making the most of your Personal Tutor

As a second-year medical student at Warwick Medical School and a Student Inclusion Officer, I understand the importance of access to resources and support systems at Warwick. One invaluable resource that often goes underutilized by students is the Personal Tutoring system. In this blog post, I aim to shed light on the benefits of accessing support from a Personal Tutor, offering insights on how to maximize this relationship for academic success and personal development.

Preparing for your first meeting

To make the most out of this initial encounter, it's crucial to come prepared. Take some time to reflect on your academic goals, challenges you've encountered, and any specific questions or concerns you may have. Having a clear agenda will make the meeting more productive!

Understanding the role of a Personal Tutor

Many students may be unsure of what exactly a Personal Tutor is for. Essentially, your Personal Tutor serves as a mentor, advisor and advocate throughout your academic journey. They are there to provide guidance, support and encouragement, helping you navigate academic challenges, personal issues and career aspirations. They also can help signpost you to all the relevant people!

Maximising regular meetings

Regular meetings with your Personal Tutor are an invaluable opportunity to track your progress, address concerns and set new goals. Come prepared to discuss your course and/or personal difficulties you may be facing and any additional support you might find useful! These meetings are not only about addressing problems but also about celebrating achievements and milestones, fostering a positive and supportive relationship between you and your tutor.

In-person or online? The pros and cons

You now often have the option to meet with your Personal Tutors either in person or virtually. Each option has its pros and cons. While in-person meetings offer a more personal and interactive experience, online meetings provide flexibility and convenience, especially for students with busy schedules or those studying remotely.

Benefits of personal tutoring - especially for marginalised groups

Personal Tutoring support can be particularly beneficial for marginalised groups within the student body. It provides a safe space for students to voice their concerns, seek guidance on navigating institutional challenges and access resources tailored to their specific needs. Personal Tutors can also play a crucial role in advocating for inclusivity and diversity within academic environments, ensuring that all students feel valued, supported and empowered to succeed.

A final note...

Remember, your Personal Tutor is there to support you every step of the way, so don't hesitate to reach out and make the most of this invaluable relationship.
